MicROCKScopica
Technical Notes

Photomicrographs
like those of these galleries were taken with a camera (at the
beginning a 35mm reflex, now a dedicated digital) mounted on a
polarising optical microscope, in which polarised light is transmitted
through (not reflected by) the rock or mineral.
Except for single crystals (e.g. gypsum) or nylon, the subjects are
pieces of rocks that
are sliced to a thickness of 0.03 mm (30 microns) and mounted on a
glass holder. These
«thin sections» are the ordinary subject of study of
mineralogists, providing useful information of geological interest.
The size of subjects (width of view) varies in the range 0.2 - 2.0mm.
Most photos are taken with two crossed polarisers and quartz red tint
plate, rotated as to reach the preferred colors.
